The experimental layout plan as per Box-Behnken design and the measured values of burr height and burr thickness are summarised in Table 7.2. ![]() The burr size values were recorded at four equally spaced locations around the circumference and the average reading was taken as the process response. The burr thickness was measured by reading the distance between the inner surface of the drilled hole and the location at which the curvature of the root of the burr begins. To measure the burr height, in the beginning, the focus was put on top of the burr and then on the exit surface and the distance between the two foci is the burr height. The ‘RPP-400’ toolmakers’ microscope (Make: Sicherun-Gen Versehen, Germany) of 1 μm resolution and 30 × magnification was employed to measure the burr height and burr thickness. In the present study, the experiments are conducted using a Box–Behnken experimental design technique and the empirical relations are established for correlating the interactive and higher-order influences of various machining parameters on MRR and surface roughness in machining of WC/Co composites.Ġ.026 C, 1.6 Mn, 0.37 Si, 0.029 P, 16.55 Cr, 10.0 Ni, 2.02 Mo, 0.16 Co, 0.027 S, 0.036 N ![]() For example, Palanikumar (2008) has used RSM for modeling the machining parameters for surface roughness in machining of glass fibre-reinforced plastic composites. Many researchers have applied RSM for modeling and analysis of the process parameters in manufacturing. RSM is one of the important techniques for determining and representing the cause-and-effect relationship between true mean responses and input control variables, influencing the responses as a two- or three-dimensional hyper surface (Godfrey and Kumar, 2006). To determine MRR and surface quality, it is necessary to employ theoretical models to predict the function of machining conditions ( Sahin and Motorcu, 2008). While machining, high quality of the parts can be achieved only through proper machining conditions. MRR and the surface finish are important in machining of WC-Co composites.
